Twelve-year-old James (Eadie) gets into a fight with another boy on the banks of the canal that runs through their 1970s working-class Glasgow neighborhood. Ryan falls in and drowns and James keeps quiet while being endlessly drawn back to the scene. Meanwhile there's trouble at home and the family's hopes for a better life (by moving to new council housing) is also in jeopardy.
