On July 17, 1944, a Victory ship anchored near San Francisco exploded, killing 323 sailors and injuring 390 (most of them black) in the worst homefront disaster of WWII. Three weeks later, 50 of the primarily untrained munition loaders who refused to continue working without safety equipment and proper training were charged with mutiny by the Navy. The men were defended by a young Thurgood Marshall (Morton) in a controversial case.
