Pregnant 17-year-old Novalee Nation (Portman) is on her way to California with her no-good boyfriend Willy Jack (Bruno), who abandons her at an Oklahoma WalMart. Without friends or funds, Novalee hides out in the store until she gives birth there. Suddenly a local celeb, Novalee finds shelter with eccentric Sister Husband (Channing) and becomes best pals with fecund single mom, Lexi (Judd). Novalee also gets a potential romance with shy librarian Forney (Frain). Superficially one-note sap and Portman seems miscast. Based on the novel by Billie Letts.
