Austrian aristocrat Werner von Basil (Jurgens) is captured by the Nazis and interrogated to uncover military information. In order to keep his sanity, the prisoner concentrates on a chess book he keeps hidden in his cell. Based on the novel by Stefan Zweig. German with subtitles.
