Old-fashioned storytelling seems to fit the story of an old-fashioned New York mobster--Joseph Bonanno (Landau)--thought to be the inspiration for Mario Puzo's Don Vito Corleone. The elderly Bonanno reflects on his life and how he got into criminal activity back in the Prohibition days, drawing the attention of boss Salvatore Maranzano (Olmos). From there it's just a matter of time as Joe works his way up through the ranks. Based on the autobiography of Joseph Bonanno and the book written by his son Bill.
