The Emperor's Shadow Movie Review 1996

Saga of two boyhood friends in China around 220 BC. Gao Jianli (You) is a famous musician and the childhood friend of powerful Emperor Ying Sheng (Wen). Jianli basically wants to be left alone to work on his music but the Emperor demands he stick around and compose a stirring imperial anthem. Add into the mix Yueyang (Qing), the Emperor's daughter who has the hots for the musician (and vice versa) although she's betrothed to another, and tragedy is bound to be the result. Mandarin with subtitles.
