Will Plunkett (Carlyle) is a lower-class thief who teams up with wastrel aristocrat Macleane (Miller) for careers as highwaymen in 18th-century London. The rogues are aided by hedonistic Lord Rochester (Cumming) and opposed by Lord Chief Justice Gibson (Gambon), whose vixenish niece, Lady Rebecca (Tyler), becomes Macleane's inamorata. Carlyle and Miller make a fine criminal duo but the film has lots of flaws to distract the viewer. (Son of Ridley) Scott's directorial debut.
