This time around the Shakespeare fantasy is transported to a Civil War-era Mississippi bayou, which is where magic-studying Gideon Prosper (Fonda) is living with his daughter, Miranda (Heigl), and a runaway slave, Ariel (Perrineau). Into this secluded world stumbles young Union soldier, Frederick Allen (Mills), with whom the lonely Miranda immediately falls in love, while Gideon is finally forced to reckon with the world in the form of his unscrupulous brother, Anthony (Glover).
