Grunt's-eye-view of the European theatre in WWII, based on the columns of war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Follows an infantry unit through Italy and concentrates on the everyday experiences of the soldiers, registering genuine emotion and realism. Mitchum's breakthrough role. Most of the actual unit played themselves. Pyle was killed by a sniper shortly before the film's release.
