Tom Oakley (Thaw) is an elderly widower, living reclusively in rural England at the onset of WWII. When abused, nine-year-old Londoner Willie Beech (Robinson) is evacuated to the countryside with a number of other children, he winds up in Tom's care. Naturally, the curmudgeonly old man and the wary young boy develop a strong friendship, which is threatened when Willie's mother unexpectedly turns up. Based on the novel by Michelle Magorian.
