Continues Bergman's exploration of his parents' unhappy marriage (following "The Best Intentions"), set mostly in 1925. Restless Anna (August) is constantly at odds with her clergyman husband, Henrik (Froler), and she has an affair with divinity student Tomas (Hanzon). Anna confesses the affair to Pastor Jacob (von Sydow), who she regards as a surrogate uncle, and he advises her to tell Henrik. Anna's confrontation with Henrik will leave lasting scars--as Anna once again reveals to Jacob some ten years later. Swedish with subtitles.
