Baldwin proves he's more than just a goofy face in a potential breakthrough role as headstrong NYPD detective Bo Dietl. Together with partner Finnerty (Penn), Dietl investigates a brutal rape and mutilation of a nun in East Harlem. Despite Brazilian director Barreto's good eye for the mean streets of New York and Baldwin's stellar performance, this is just one more derivative police drama without distinction. Barreto's wife Irving makes an appearance as a mean-spirited federal agent. Based on the autobiography on real-life retired cop Bo Dietl.
