First adaptation of the James Jones novel about the fight for Guadalcanal focuses on the relationship between Sgt. Welsh (Warden) and Pvt. Doll (Dullea). As battle experience hardens Doll, the mutual hatred the two have changes to a grudging respect. Effectively portrays the dehumanizing psychological effects of war.
