The isolation of a remote valley community (filmed in Australia's Blue Mountains) is enhanced by the discovery of a woman's body and the slaughter of livestock. Maurice (Barrett) and Ida (Blethyn) have scratched out a farm living but personally never recovered from the death of their baby son long before. Outcast Laurie (Roxbaurgh) spends his time drifting through the countryside while pregnant Ronnie (Otto) has been abandoned by her lover. The four are brought together by death and what (or who) might be causing it. Based on the novel by Tim Winton.
