Vikram arrives in San Francisco from Bombay to attend university and discovers that his sponser has returned to India. With little money, he gets a room in a seedy hotel run by an Indian immigrant, who also gives Vikram a menial job. As he begins to explore the city Vikram meets arty punk Sue, but with his visa running out and the INS ready to deport him, Vikram needs to convince Sue to a green card marriage.
