Carla (Lewis) is the mentally challenged but exuberant member of the repressed Tate family. After leaving a "special school," she convinces her uptight parents Elizabeth (Keaton) and Radley (Skerritt) to let her enroll in a vocational program. She meets and falls for fellow retarded student Danny (Ribisi), much to her parents' dismay. Love wins out, but the script is so sappy that a maple syrup factory could be built on it. Lewis and Ribisi do an admirable job of rising above the material, which was co-written by schmaltz-meister director Garry Marshall.
