Loose adaptation of the 1949 film has special effects wizard Rick Baker creating a very life-like model of the 15-foot, 2,000-lb. gorilla. With his elaborate features, including a pair of huge brown eyes, this Joe has more personality than his human allies Jill (Theron) and O'Hara (Paxton) who, in between saving Joe from evil South African poachers, spend most of the film giving each other the goo-goo eyes. Wholesome, harmless, lightweight (the movie, not the gorilla) family entertainment.
