Originally released under a different title and at 170 minutes, this re-cut English-language debut feature for Italian director Tornatore still has its problems. An abandoned infant is discovered aboard the luxury liner Virginian in 1900 and reared by the engine crew. As an adult, the nicknamed 1900 (Roth), has become a virtuoso pianist in the ship's orchestra and has superstitiously never set foot off the boat. His best friend is trumpet player Max (Vince), who tells the story in flashback after learning the ship has been condemned. But since 1900 remains an enigma, you won't really care what happens to him.
