Mistaking a plane crash in his yard for an atomic bomb blast, paranoid scientist Calvin (Walken) and his pregnant wife Helen (Spacek) lock themselves in their bomb shelter. Fearful of radioactive fallout, they raise their son Adam (Fraser) in the shelter on a diet of canned goods, Perry Como music, and ballroom dancing. After 35 years, Adam is sent out for supplies and to find a nice, non-mutant wife. Plot degenerates into by-the-book romantic comedy mush after he meets cute with Eve (Silverstone), a thoroughly modern woman with a low opinion of modern men.
