The visuals dazzle but the disjointed narrative proves a challenge in what Kar-Wai originally intended to be a third story for his film "Chungking Express." Contract killer Wong Chi-Ming (Lai) has been getting his assignments from a nameless female agent (Reis) who's fallen for him. Wong wants to retire, which upsets her. Then there's mute ex-con He Zhiwo (Kaneshiro) who gets involved with a strange young woman named Cherry (Young) who still loves her ex-boyfriend, and everybody crosses paths but there's really no connection and nothing makes much sense anyway.
