Whatever Movie Review 1998

Straightforward teenage coming of age story set in a small New Jersey town in the early 80s. Focuses on the friendship of two high school seniors, aspiring artist Anna (Weil) and party animal Brenda (Morgan). Anna copes with her bitter single mom (Rossetter) and bratty little brother and hopes to escape to a prestigious art school in New York, but is in danger of being dragged down by Brenda. The two girls numb their mostly grim home lives with drugs, alcohol and casual sex at joyless parties. The revelation that Brenda is being sexually abused at home moves the plot into the TV movie realm.
