Charles Stewart (Ladd) is the privileged son of a ship owner who discovers just how difficult a sailor's life in the 1840s can be. Drinking in a Boston waterfront dive, he's shanghaied and pressed into service aboard the S.S. Pilgrim, which is bound for California. Sadistic Captain Thompson (da Silva) brutalizes the men in an effort to set a record time for the voyage. Stewart and the crew eventually mutiny and face trial back in Boston. Based on the novel by Richard Henry Dana.
