Illegal Pakistani immigrants occupy a squalid boardinghouse in '60s Yorkshire, including newly arrived Amir (Malhotra). He settles in, befriending young student Sakib (Kumar), and learning the ropes from house leader Hossein Shah (Puri). But Shah brings unexpected problems to the group when his pregnant, white English girlfriend Mary (Ball) comes to stay and his nephew Irshad (Bhatti) arranges a paper marriage with the young woman. Based on the novel "Return Journey" by Abdullah Hussein.
