Postwar Russian drama set in 1952. Katya (Rednikova) is a young widow with a six year-old-son, Sanya (Philipchuk). She's traveling by train when a soldier named Tolyan (Mashkov) enters their compartment. But the end of the trip, Katya's decided to go off with Tolyan and the threesome become a family. But Tolyan harbors a violent streak and Katya also discovers that Tolyan is an imposter--he's not a soldier but a thief. Still, she loves him and soon becomes his accomplice. Russian with subtitles.
