Marital ennui and male friendship is explored in this adaptation of Julian Barnes' 1980 novel. In 1977, advertising exec Chris Lloyd (Bale) is settled in a London suburb with his wife, Marion (Watson), and their baby. His predictable existence is blasted when old chum, Toni (Ross), arrives. The duo once shared a dream of living a bohemian life and Chris is reminded of a time he spent in Paris in the late-'60s and his wild French lover. Toni increasingly tries to undermine Chris' marriage as he struggles to decide what he expects from life.
