Psycho-sexual story of Los Angeles attorney Eve Stephens (Swinton), who, because of bizarre dreams and fantasies, leads a dual life. Successful Eve is being considered for appointment as a judge, but her enormous insecurity and neuroses only increase, landing her in kinky relationships with both sexes. During an unlikely reunion with her sister, Madelyn (Madigan), a kleptomaniac with a Ph.D., Eve is forced to spend time with Madelyn's motley roommates--her landlady and the landlady's odd daughter and sister. This semi-reunion brings about some self-realization on the part of both sisters about their dysfunctional behavior. Filled with detailed symbolism, powerful imagery, and dream sequences. Rife with Freudian psychology, movie is based on Louise J. Kaplan's feminist study on female behavior and sexuality, "Female Perversions: The Temptations of Emma Bovary." Extremely glossy visuals and rich production design brings life to this rather heavy story.
