Young Christine (Morse) is a 14th-century woman who decides to devote her life to the Virgin Mary after seeing visions. The local priest (Eccleston) encourages the girl to become an anchoress--a walled-in recluse--whose blessings are asked for by pilgrims. The priest treats Christine as a religious trophy, conveying power on himself, while she slowly realizes she's escaped the outside world only to trade one sort of bondage for another. Based on the true story of the Anchoress of Shere. Stylized images heighten the sense of otherworldliness.
