Director Stevens was asked by General Dwight D. Eisenhower to document WWII in Europe, beginning in 1943. Stevens, along with writers William Saroyan and Irwin Shaw, as well as other noted directors and cinematographers provided valuable footage of Allied troops shortly after D-Day, the liberation of Denmark, the freeing of the Dachau concentration camp, and other notable events.
