Crisis has overtaken Aldminster Cathedral and its famed boys' choir, which was begun more than 400 years before. Expensive repairs are needed on the building and ambitious dean, Hugh Cavendish (Fox), is ready to sacrifice the choir if it will get funding and blunt city council criticism about what some see as an expensive frill. Opposing are King's School headmaster Alexander Troy (Warner) and music master Leo Beckford (Farrell)--who just happens to be having an affair with his top choirster's mother (Harrison). Religion, politics, music, and sex all provide for some interesting drama. Based on the novel by Joanna Trollope.
