Director/producer Johnstone and childhood friend, producer Barbara Ettinger, offer a portrait of their growing up under the substantial influence of their respective nannies. Martha Kneifel escaped Nazi Germany and was hired by the Johnstones in 1941, remaining with the family and helping with their five children for the next 30 years. South Carolina sharecropper's daughter Ethel Edwards was hired by the Ettingers in 1954 to care for their six children and still remains as a companion to the producer's mother.
