Dull, mishmashy costume drama (set in the 17th century) about an imprisoned author (Dafoe) who became intrigued with the mystery woman who had occupied the next cell. They exchanged notes, and he vows to find her when he's released from prison. But first he spends a seductive night, exchanging stories about past conquests, at the chateau of the Marquise (Olin), who, of course, turns out to be the mystery lady. Based on the novel "La Nuit er le Moment" by Claude-Prosper de Jolyot Crebillon.
