Tells the story of the railroad crews in the deep south who installed, repaired, and replaced rail lines from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century. The workers, mostly African-American, used a cadence sung or shouted by a caller to keep a steady synchronization. Includes retired workers reenacting and describing the work and songs. They also discuss the importance of the caller, rhythm, and songs to their work. Some film clips and photographs are used.
