Abel Mason (Hinds) is an unhappily married man with a vindictive wife (Walsh) and a young son he's desperate to provide for. When an affair with a married woman ends in murder, Mason and his son travel in search of a new life. Desperate for a home, Mason enters into a bigamous marriage with a widow--only to find himself falling in love with her sister. Based on the novel by Catherine Cookson. Set in the years between England's depression and WW2.
