Giant Robo: The Night the Earth Stood Still, Vol. 1 Movie Review 1992

With the Earth now dependent on energy created by the Shizuma Drive, the crime syndicate Big Fire plans to control the world by disrupting the drive's functions and plunging city after city into darkness. Only Interpol's Experts of Justice which includes young Daisaku and his Giant Robo, stand in their way. This volume contains the first two episodes. "The Black Attache Case" finds Big Fire going after an alternate source of energy while a scientist, with the help of the Experts of Justice, flees by train and car. Next, the history of Dr. Shizuma and his much-maligned research partner Dr. Van Folger is recounted in "The Tragedy of Bashtarlle." Character and mecha designs with a cool retro look, good quality animation and music performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra mark a first-class production. But the coolest thing has to be the Big Fire oath. This volume begins a six-volume series.
