Oral history of the Civil War is kept alive in Turkey Neck Bend, Kentucky as is the legend of outlaw Beanie Short. A deserter from the Confederate Army, Short terrorized the small Southern community before being gunned down by Union vigilantes. Nothing was written about Short's exploits for more than 100 years but his legend persisted due to local storytellers.
