Roderick Fitzgerald (Milland) and his sister Pamela (Hussey) buy a house in Cornwall, only to find it is haunted. Doors open and close by themselves, strange scents fill the air, and they hear sobbing during the night. Soon they are visited by a woman (Russell) with an odd link to the house--her mother is the spirit who haunts the house. Chilling and unforgettable, this is one of the first films to deal seriously with ghosts. Based on the novel by Dorothy Macardle.
