On her deathbed Ruth's mother leaves her a locket which promises hope in this one-reel feature shot on the Lower East Side of New York City. While working in her father's pawnshop, Ruth falls in love and marries a poor bookseller. Her father who had arranged a rich match disowns his daughter. Ruth's husband dies in an accident leaving her with a small daughter and no means of support so, gravely ill, Ruth sends her daughter to pawn her late mother's locket. The little girl winds up at her unknown grandfather's pawnshop. When he recognizes the locket he rushes to his daughter's side (too late to save her) but vows to care for his granddaughter.
