Pickford inspiringly plays two difficult roles. As Stella Maris, she's a wealthy orphaned cripple who's in love with the married John Risca (Tearle), whose wife, Louise (Ankewich), is an abusive alcoholic. John eventually leaves her and Louise takes out her anger on homely servant Unity Blake (Pickford's second role). When Unity is eventually rescued by John, she also falls in love with him. Brimming with the tragic consequences of love.
