A simple, moving pageant-of-life fable. Philippa (Kjer) and Martina (Federspiel) took over their late father's ministry in a small Danish coastal town. Widowed Frenchwoman Babette (Audran) has spent 14 years in their service and, after winning a lottery prize, decides she will prepare a lavish banquiet in honor of their father's 100th birthday. The religiously conservative villagers don't know what to make of such bounty--or the pleasure it brings to their senses. Adapted from a tale by Isak Dinesen. French and Danish with subtitles.
