Beginning in 1947 and continuing until 1974, experimental filmmaker Maya Deren travelled to the island nation of Haiti to produce a movie about Haitian dance. Once there, she became interested in the study of the Voudun religion. Deren became an initiate and made several trips to visit Haiti for study. The Voudun priests and priestesses gave Deren permission to film some of the meetings and ceremonies of their closely held religion.
