Extravagant and funny version of the Dumas classic. Three swashbucklers (Reed, Chamberlain, Finlay) and their country cohort (York), who wishes to join the Musketeers, set out to save the honor of the French Queen (Chaplin). To do so they must oppose the evil cardinal (Heston) who has his eyes on the power behind the throne and who is aided by cohort Milady (Dunaway). Welch is amusing as clumsy lady-in-waiting Constance. A strong cast leads this winning combination of slapstick and high adventure. Followed by "The Four Musketeers" and "The Return of the Musketeers."
