Previously filmed in 1935, this version of Dashiell Hammet's novel is a vintage mystery concerning nominally corrupt politician Madvig (Donlevy) being framed for murder, and his assistant Ed Beaumont (Ladd) sleuthing out the real culprit. One of Ladd's first starring vehicles; Lake is the mystery woman who loves him, and Bendix a particularly vicious thug.
