Nicholson's superb acting brings to life this character study of a talented musician who has given up a promising career and now works on the oil rigs. After a few years he returns home to attempt one last communication with his dying father and perhaps, reconcile himself with his fear of failure and desire for greatness. Black, Anspach, and Bush create especially memorable characters. Nicholson ordering toast via a chicken salad sandwich is a classic.
