Julia (Beckinsale at the beginning of her career) is restoring a 500-year-old painting of a chess game when she discovers an inscription hidden on the painting that says "Who killed the knight?". Some investigation indicates the painter was telling the story of a series of killings that followed the pattern of play in the painting, and that pattern is being duplicated in the present day. Complex and interesting story is undermined by poor acting (Beckinsale's inexperience shows) and inconsistent direction.
