Photographer Jean (McCormack) arrives at Smuttynose Island, off the coast of New Hampshire, to research an infamous 1873 ax-murder case involving two Norwegian immigrant women (Cartlidge, Shaw) a local man (Hinds), and an unreliable witness (Polley). You see their story in flashback as Jean struggles with her own domestic dilemmas--her drunken poet husband Thomas (Penn), his brother Rich (Lucas), and Rich's sexy girlfriend Adaline (Hurley). Jealousy, lies, and betrayal abound in both stories. Based on the novel by Anita Shreve.
