In 1983, physician William Blakely (Jones) decides to retire to the small Georgia town where he grew up. But the lakeside community is lilywhite and hostile (Blakely's family was originally driven out by racial violence). However, fatherless 12-year-old Jamie (LeDoux) and the doc become friends, despite pressures on the boy to toe the racist line.
