Tron Movie Review

Computer programmer Jeff Bridges is sucked into the memory banks of a giant mainframe and exists as a warrior in a virtual-reality civilization running parallel to the outside world. Wielding never-defined superpowers, the bewildered hero fights video-game battles against a rogue artificial intelligence seeking to dominate mankind. The sketchy plot of this much-anticipated Disney sci fi sounds better than it plays, with more attention paid to ground-breaking computer graphics f/x than the script, which isn't halfway as clever as any given episode of the superficially similar ‘90s TV show ReBoot. Some designs by famed sf illustrator Jean “Moebius” Girard. Music by Wendy Carlos.

1982 (PG) 96m/C Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, Barnard Hughes, Dan Shor; D: Steven Lisberger. Nominations: Academy Awards ‘82: Best Costume Design, Best Sound. VHS, Beta, LV DIS
