Star Trek Generations Movie Review
The television voyage continues in this first film featuring the Next Generation cast, and seventh overall Star Trek film. Bridging the gap between the generations is legendary Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Following an explosion aboard the newly christened Enterprise B, Kirk is trapped in a space anomaly known as the Nexus. Anyone who enters the Nexus feels as if they are in a kind of Nirvana, reliving their happiest moments. Years later, Kirk is rescued by his successor and current captain of the Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). The two captains join forces to save the galaxy from the evil Dr. Soren (played with villainous glee by Malcolm McDowell), who longs to return to the Nexus at all costs, including destroying a solar system. Meanwhile, the Enterprise battles renegade Klingons who have joined Soren's quest. Android Data (Brent Spiner) provides comic relief (and possibly the funniest moment in Star Trek history) after he receives an emotion chip. Great special effects (courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic) and a heroic ending for Captain Kirk are mixed with the traditional Star Trek morality lesson. The result is a rousing-good space adventure. Whoopi Goldberg makes an appearance as the mysterious and enlightened barkeep Guinan, and Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) from the original cast have cameos.
