The Net Movie Review
The ever-spunky Sandra Bullock gets stuck behind a computer screen rather than the wheel of a bus as reclusive computer systems analyst Angela Bennett. After a tip from a friend she has met only via the Internet, Angela investigates a Web page linked to top-secret government information. Soon after her discovery, Angela's friend dies in a suspicious plane crash just as they are to meet face to face. Angela decides to take a much-needed vacation, where she meets the suave man of her dreams, Jeremy Devlin (Jeremy Northam). All is perfect, until he tries to kill her for a computer disk. Angela discovers her identity has been erased, and she is on the run from the conspirators who want to eliminate her. She turns to her ex-boyfriend Dennis Miller for help. This high-tech update of the traditional Hitchcockian thriller works well, mostly thanks to Bullock. Director Irwin Winkler smoothly weaves the high-tech aspects into the plot, demonstrating just how technology dependent society has become. That makes this bit of techno paranoia engaging and effective.
