La Jetee Movie Review

One of the greatest film shorts of all time, and the inspiration for the 1995 Terry Gilliam sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys. Told almost completely through still photographs with narration, this post WWIII tale takes place in a future Paris where survivors now live in subterranean vaults. Repeating image of a woman's face and a childhood experience at an airport provide impetus for time travel through memory projection. Director Chris Marker, also a novelist and photographer, makes use of all his talents and delivers a totally unique and completely spellbinding photo-novel-movie with such a deep philosophical paradox that it better make you think a little. Available on VHS with An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, an Oscar-winning French short (based on the Ambrose Bierce story) that was aired as an episode of TV's The Twilight Zone.
